I usually prefer making spice powders at home rather than buying it from outside as I feel they are much better than the store-bought ones. There is no preservative added and they really add flavours & fragrance to the food. I agree its little time consuming but once the job is done, the aroma coming out from the flavorful masalas is just overwhelming. So here I share with you all the method of preparing ” Home Made Authentic Karnataka style Bisi Bele Bath Powder “. This easy to make spice blend is the heart of Bisi bele bath

I can proudly say Bisi bele bath is a trademark signature dish of Karnataka. Its basically a mix of rice, lentils and vegetables. The mixture is spiced up using ” Bisi bele bath spice powder ” and later served hot. Of course, you can use MTR ready powder to make them but as I said it can never match the authentic homemade version. Make Bisi bele bath masala powder once, store in an airtight container and use few tsps ..whenever you are making Bisi bele bath .

Every household has its own recipe for bisi bele bath powder, though the basic ingredients remain the same, there will be few changes in proportion. The one I am sharing today is my Mom’s version who’s Bisi Bele bath is very famous. People visiting our home craves for her bisi bele bath and she happily pleases them. She always says ” ‘ Marathi moggu / Kapok buds ‘ is the secret ingredient in the spice powder so never omit them . “. I too agree these buds give an important distinguished flavour.

So are you ready to jot down the recipe of ” Authentic Karnataka Style Bisi Bele Bath Powder “? Here it goes…

Few variations and points to note before making Bisibele Bath Masala Powder :

  • As said earlier, for authentic Karnataka style Bisibele bath powder .. marathi moggu / kapok buds are essential. It adds as a unique flavour.
  • Also, poppy seeds are very essential while making Bisi bele bath powder. So don’t omit it.
  • If you want you can omit dry coconut. This further increases shelf life. You can grind and add at the time of making Bisi Bele bath or keep masala powder in the fridge after using so that it stays good for months together.
  • Usually, Bisi bele bath is spicy. But if you can’t take much spice to reduce the chillies. I always use 2 varieties of red chilli to make this spice powder .. Byadgi chilli for colour and Guntur variety for spice.
  • I always make these powders in small batches ie once made gets over in 3-5 use.
  • This masala powder can also be used while making sambar. It gives a different taste.

Hello Smitha avare!Thank you very much for this post. Having landed from Bangalore at Pune I assumed that I could easily get MTR s version but was in for a surprise. As you rightly commented folks here don’t even know what BBB is! So your recipe will helpme feed my family some BBB after all! With reference to store bought powder I feel that dry khopra is not added in those, nor do we add while making the BBB. Further you also mentioned that channa dal is not there in MTR s version ..what way adding it is helpful?wouldnt it dilute the powder?Thank you in advance for your reply..
