About The Recipe

Cabbage Chutney (Kosu Chutney, Cabbage Pachadi ) is a quick and easy to prepare delcious South Indian style chutney made using cabbage as its main ingredient. Its a nice change from the regular chutneys. I you are looking for ways to empty that small chunk of cabbage lying in your fridge , the this chutney can be one way . Tastes awesome with hot steamed rice , dosa , idli , chapathi . I suggest you must try it. Temper it with little extra oil and give a tempering… yummy.

Cabbage Chutney Recipe with step by step photos

  • Rinse and chop the cabbage. Also chop the onion and tomato. keep aside
  • Heat 2 tsp of oil in a frying pan. Add in tsp of urad dal , tsp of channa dal , few red chili (mix of byadgi and guntur chilli ) and hing. Fry them under medium flame.
  • Roast until dal changes color and chillies are crisp .
  • Next add in 1.5 cup chopped cabbage and 1/2 onion . Add haldi , tsp of salt and fry 1-2 mins till raw smell goes.
  • Next , add in tomato , tamarind and combine.
  • Cook 3-4 mins .
  • Lastly add 3-4 tbsp coconut and mix . Addition of coconut is optional . Switch off and allow to cool .
  • To the mixer add all the roasted cooled masala ingredients . Add salt and little jaggery if you want.Grind coarse , without adding water .
  • Take care not to make super fine paste. A little bit texture of cabbage is good and makes the chutney more tasty. This is how the chutney will looks once ground.
  • Lastly prepare a tempering . To a pan add any oil you like . Add mustard and urad dal , splutter . Add few garlic flakes ( optional ) , fry crisp . Later add little hing and curry leaves . Can add a broken red chilli too . Now add grounded chutney to this . Saute 2-3 mins.
  • Serve Cabbage chutney with hot rice . Drizzle little ghee while mixing. Will enhance the taste.

Few points to note

  • You can use regular cabbage or purple cabbage
  • Addition of coconut and garlic is purely optional.

Ingredients
 

  • 1 1/2 cup Cabbage, chopped
  • 1/2 medium sie Onion, diced
  • 1 no Tomato, diced
  • 3-4 tbsp Coconut, optional
  • 1/2 tsp Haldi / Turmeric
  • 2 tsp oil
  • tsp Urad Dal
  • tsp Channa Dal
  • 4-8 nos Red Chilli, mix of Guntur and Byadgi Chilli
  • Hing
  • amla size Tamarind
  • 1 tsp Jaggery
  • salt to taste

To Temper

  • 2-3 tsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard
  • 1 tsp Urad Dal
  • 3-4 flakes Garlic, optional
  • pinch of Hing
  • few Curry leaves
