Today i have for you all simple, healthy and very nutritious ” Methi Dal  ” . Made with fresh methi leaves .. This dish is very healthy and easy to make. The quickest and easiest dish , perfect to make when we are running out of time or have to make something for lunch quickly . Just dump all the ingredients together and cook . A flavorful tadka to pep up the dish and voila ,a delicous bowl of methi dal is ready in no time.

As we all know methi leaves are very healthy and lentils are full of protein… this Dal is one power-packed dish. There are various ways one make methi dal .. this is one simple version. Enjoy this simple home cooked food, with some steaming hot rice, little ghee and some papad … comfort food at it’s best ..absolutely finger licking !!!

Methi Dal Recipe with step by step photos

  • Wash the tuvar dal well and soak it for 30 mins – 1 hour .
  • Clean and wash the methi leaves thoroughly . If the stems are tender , you can add that too .
  • Chop the methi leaves finely. Keep aside.
  • To a pressure cooker , Add tsp of oil and add drained soaked Dal . Saute 2-3 mins. Sautéing dal helps in enhancing flavor.
  • Later , add chopped leaves, diced onion, Diced Tomato , Green chillies , turmeric powder .
  • Add 2-3 cup water and tsp of oil.Combine. Let the water level be just enough to cover the dal and greens. Pressure cook for 3 whistle
  • Once pressure releases , mash the cooked dal . You will see that the dal would have cooked soft and creamy.
  • Add salt to taste ,red chilli powder and tamarind water . Combine well .
  •  Add water to adjust the consistency . Simmer and boil dal for 3-4 mins.
  • Heat ghee in a small pan. When the ghee is hot, splutter mustard and add jeera . Add crushed garlic .When it gets dried golden , add hing , curry leaves and broken dry red chilli . Pour the tempering over dal .
  • Enjoy this tasty Methi Dal with some hot rice, little ghee and some papad … a comforting meal is ready !!

Few points to note while making Methi Dal

  • Always choose tender , young , fresh Methi leaves .
  • I use tuvar dal to make this dish . However , if you want can use moong dal.
  • Instead of methi leaves , you can add other greens too .
  • If you don’t like garlic , you can skip it .
  • Intead of pressure cooking methi leaves , you can saute them in ghee after the tempering and add to the cooked dal .
  • Instead of pressure cooker , you can use Instant Pot .

Ingredients
 

  • 1.5 cup Methi Greens
  • 1 cup Tuvar Dal
  • 1 medium size Onion, Chopped
  • 1 no Tomato, chopped
  • 4-7 no Green Chillies, based on your preferance
  • 1 tsp Haldi
  • 1 ts Chilli powder
  • small lemon size Tamarind
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • Salt to taste

To Temper

  • 2-3 tsp Ghee / oil, Ghee preferred
  • 1 tsp Mustard
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds / Jeera
  • 3-5 flakes Garlic, crushed
  • few Curry Leaves
  • 1 no Red Chilli , broken
  • big pinch Hing

Instructions
