LET’S BREAK THE HABIT OF SKIPPING BREAKFAST

How many of you agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? I strongly believe in the popular saying – “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper”. A good healthy nutritious breakfast fuels you and prepares for the day ahead. Children who eat breakfast regularly are known to perform better at school. Habitual breakfast consumption is positively associated with cognitive functioning and school performance in children. Though my kids leave home at 7 AM for school, I make sure they never skip breakfast and try to make it as healthy as possible.
Regular breakfast consumption helps in managing weight too. Skipping breakfast isn’t a weight loss strategy. Unfortunately, many don’t realize this and end up skipping breakfast. We keep making some excuses– feeling too lazy to wake up, too tired to cook in the morning, in a rush for work, have no appetite or not being hungry, being on a diet, etc. However, we don’t realize, how much damage is being caused by this behaviour in the long run.
Many don’t realize that the nutrients missed at breakfast cannot be replenished during the course of the day. By the time we wake up, our body usually is in need of energy and nutrients after an overnight fast and needs to be refueled. The body is low on blood glucose which can interfere with proper functioning of the brain. That’s the reason some call their breakfast “food for the brain”.
I agree, most of the Indian “Tiffins” are time-consuming and need a bit of planning, and might not work for most on a crazy busy weekday. Nevertheless, don’t let these reasons keep you away from the benefits of a healthy start to the day. Opt for a wholesome breakfast to give you a “right start to the day”. If you feel like you are running short of time, you can always opt for a balanced breakfast of cereals, milk and fresh / dry fruit along with some nuts.
Are Cereals Nourishing?
Breakfast cereals are made from processing familiar grains. It is super easy to prepare and can be eaten either hot or cold with some milk and sugar/ jaggery. A breakfast of cereals and milk helps in recharging as well as provides you with a much-needed portion of proteins, calcium and some vitamins.
Since Kellogg’s launched its original corn flakes about 110 years ago, it has always ensured that consumers enjoy a wholesome breakfast with a bowl of their cereal.
Kellogg’s cereals are typically low in fat, naturally cholesterol free and fit nicely into the healthy eating recommendations. The cereals being grain-based help to get fibre first thing in the morning along with vitamins and minerals since they are fortified.

From Seed to Spoon
Most of Kellogg’s cereals are derived from wholesome grains like wheat, corn, oats etc. that are cooked with a handful of ingredients plus vitamins and minerals are added to the cereal.

Are you aware of the variety of grain cereals from Kellogg’s available in the market?

Kellogg’s Corn flakes: Made with real natural corn, abundant in carbohydrates, being high in iron and B vitamins, corn flakes work very well for kids as well as adults. Just top it with some milk and fruits and you are set. If you are like me who loves chatpata things, corn flakes bhel/chiwda could be the option you are looking for.
Kellogg’s Wheat flakes is a nice change from our regular wheat roti and they have added bran to provide you with a product that is high in fibre and are fortified with essential nutrients.
Other than these, there is also the kids-friendly Kellogg’s Choco & Kellogg’s Special K for people who are looking specifically for low-fat options or weight managers.
With so many options for quick yet nourishing breakfast, we don’t have any more reason to skip breakfast, right? And if you still want variety, well you can head over to Kellogg’s website and check out a long list of various mouthwatering dishes that can be made using these cereals in minutes. Always remember – a balanced breakfast should provide 20-25% of our daily nutritional requirements.
This national nutrition month, don’t you think it’s time to make a lifestyle change and #BreaktheHabit of skipping breakfast for a healthier and happier lifestyle?
