Today I have for you all an authentic dish from Tamilnadu – Raw Banana Podi Recipe – Vazhaikkai Podi ; a unique side dish prepared with roasted raw banana. The aroma of roasted raw banana, flavour from roasted spices makes the dish irresistible. Paired with hot rice and ghee it tastes absolutely delicious… love it with curd rice too. I learnt this dish from one neighbour aunty and can’t thank her enough for introducing me to such a different way of making balekayi palya.
The original dish calls for roasting raw banana and then crumbling it and tossing it with spices. However, if you want to finish it more quickly, can pressure cook raw banana in a cooker. However there will be a compromise in taste. Do try both the variations and you will agree with me 🙂
Place raw banana on an open flame. Rotate and roast till the skin is charred. If you want, can skip this step .. cook in a cooker and crumble. But as said earlier , roasted version is more aromatic.
Once raw bananas are nicely charred and skin starts cracing , it's done. Keep it covered for few mins till its cool.
Once raw banana's are cool, peel the charred skin.
Crumble the peeled roasted raw banana or grate using grater . Keep aside.
To prepare masala, in a pan heat a tsp of oil. Add urad dal, channa dal, dhania, few red chillies, pepper, dry coconut (kopra), curry leaves and hing . Saute till spices are crisp and aromatic.
Once spices are crisp, switch off and allow to cool, Powder. No need to make super fine powder. semi course will do.
Now that our raw banana is roasted and crumbled, masala is ready... it's time to put them all together and make a stir fry. Take a pan and prepare the tempering. Heat oil, splutter mustard, urad dal and curry leaves.
Add grated raw banana's, salt and haldi. Saute for 2-3 mins. Add masala powder and mix well . Roast for 2-3 mins.
Roasted raw banana stir fry is ready. Serve hot
Enjoy raw banana podi with hot rice topped with ghee or dal rice or curd rice .. tastes really good.
